The terms below are important to the study of the French of Outremer. More terms will be added as the field develops.
Outremer
"Outremer" itself is problematic and did not always refer to the Latin East. The meaning of the term often depends on who was using it, as "outremer" was at times employed in a non-geographically specific manner, simply to denote a destination reached by travel across a body of water. In some ways, this ambiguity invites us to explore how the French-language term was manipulated, and how the idea of 'outremer" expanded as the settlements in the Latin East were shaped and reshaped over the period under discussion.
